PEER SUPPORT SPECIALIST

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES: This is a full-time on-site Peer Support Specialist role located in Greeley, CO. The Peer Support Specialist will be responsible for providing navigation, assistance, advocacy, and discussion support for justice-involved clients. The role calls for candidates that have lived experience in the areas of incarceration, substance abuse, gang impact, and/or homelessness. The role entails offering emotional and practical support, serving as a mentor, and facilitating group activities to promote social connections and personal growth. At this time, Jobs of Hope is seeking male candidates for this role. The Peer Support Specialist will have a caseload of male clients. The Peer Support Specialist works closely with the Intake Coordinator, Case Manager, and Mental Health Counselor in order to assist clients with fully realizing and implementing the advice and tasks assigned to them as part of their unique re-entry plans. The Peer Support Specialist maintains frequent communication with the JoH Program team and Executive Director, providing updates on client progress being made toward reaching and/or meeting goals. Jobs of Hope offers a medical reimbursement plan and retirement plan with up to 3% match. Work hours can vary due to client needs. Salary Range: $18.00-$20.00 (Compensation based on experience and education). This position is a full-time (40 hours per week) position. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: •Conducts educational and/or support sessions as directed, using sound recovery and resiliency principles. •Provides education/support services as directed in individual or group settings. •Plans and leads educational, supportive, recreational or social activities with service recipients as appropriate to the specific program. •Assists Case Manager and Intake Manager in implementing re-entry goals for program participants, and assists program participants in developing steps to attain those goals. •Identifies barriers clients face in accessing physical and mental health services, and in partnership with Program staff, helps clients develop plans to overcome barriers. •Assists program participants with transportation on a limited basis (court appointments, counseling or medical appointments, job interviews, etc.). •Maintains professional relationships with program participants and with other staff; maintains appropriate interpersonal boundaries. •Refers program participants to the appropriate staff for issues that fall outside the scope of peer services. •Provides activities to program participants in an educational, hopeful, and supportive manner. •Maintains safety in the program environment. •Maintains timely service, program, and client records. •Attends regularly scheduled staff meetings, program meetings, and attend other meetings and trainings as required by Jobs of Hope. OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES •Flexibility to attend various inter-agency meetings or program events in the evenings or weekends as assigned by Executive Director. •Attends professional development and community trainings as approved by Executive Director. •Assists in the development and implementation of program policies and procedures. •Coordinates responsibilities with other staff members to insure an integrated team approach to all programs and day-to-day operations of JoH. •Any other tasks or duties as assigned. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Preference for an individual who has the strength, experience and passion to work with adult clients experiencing significant life challenges, such as incarceration, gang affiliation, substance abuse, mental health issues, and legal issues. REQUIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: •Cultural competency. •Knowledge of peer support principles, objectives, standards, and methods. •Knowledge of community and government services deliveries. •Knowledge of motivational interviewing concepts and techniques preferred. •Problem solving and advocacy skills •Demonstrated strong communication, organizational and interpersonal skills. •Knowledge of the basic theories and practices of social work, interviewing and assessment techniques, and professional reports and documents preparation. •Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients, other employees, organizations, and the public is required. •Flexibility and ability to multi-task. •Basic knowledge of Windows computing devices and common office applications such as Gmail, Google docs, Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint. •Inputs client information, and maintains client and program data, including confidentiality. •Knowledge of the service population’s cultural and socioeconomic characteristics and the appropriate techniques and practices for the client population. •Ability to interact effectively as a team member and independently with JoH staff, and with a diverse client base. •Demonstrated qualities of empathy, assertiveness, and organization; a high degree of integrity and responsibility. •Ability to read, understand and follow oral and written instruction. •Ability to work independently in a small office environment which includes office cleanup and maintenance. •Timely responsiveness to emails, calls and client requests. •Reliable transportation and provide proof of insurance. •Bilingual preferred but not essential EDUCATION AND FORMAL TRAINING: •Certification in peer counseling or peer navigation, or related field. •Equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge, and ability for the position may be considered in lieu of a degree. •Experience serving vulnerable populations, including ex-offenders and homeless preferred. LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION: •Valid Colorado Driver’s License •Working Environment Physical Requirements: oFrequent contact with client and public by phone or in person oRequires sitting for long periods of time (60% of time) oSome bending, stretching, reaching, crouching, pulling, lifting, carrying, and handling required. oManual dexterity required for use of calculator, computer keyboard, photocopier, telephone, and other office equipment. oClimbing up and down stairs oRequires a normal range of hearing and eyesight to communicate with clients and public. Must be comfortable within faith-based environment, including faith-based principles infused in all program aspects.
